Zhejiang Gongshang University is located in Hangzhou, a historical city well known as "A heaven on earth". SESE is situated in the Jiaogong Road campus of Zhejiang Gongshang University in the downtown of Hangzhou, where is close to all amenities. Both the West Lake and the Xixi Wetland is less than 3 km away from the Jiaogong Road campus. As all know, the West Lake has been awarded as World Cultural Heritage for its beautiful scene and places of interests, while the Xixi Wetland is a unique urban secondary wetland with plenty of ecological resources, pure natural scenes and profound cultural accumulation. 

   SESE is a school with distinct characteristics and strength of engineering discipline in Zhejiang Gongshang University. SESE consists of three departments, namely the Department of Environmental Engineering (started to offer Bachelor Degree of Engineering in 2000, Master Degree of Sciences Program in 2005 and Master of Engineering Program in 2010), Department of Environmental Sciences (started to offer Bachelor Degree of Science in 2007) and Department of Municipal Engineering (started to offer Bachelor Degree of Engineering in 2008).

    In 2011, SESE was granted the First-level Disciplines for Master's Degree of Environmental Science and Engineering. Under the administration of SESE there are several school-level research institutes, including the Research Institute for Resources and Environment, the Research Institute for Solid Wastes Disposal and Reclamation, the Research Institute for Integrated Utilization of Water Resource, and the Research Institute for Environmental Plasmas, which take on important duties in education, research and social service.

    After several years of development, SESE has established a creative and sustainable team of research and education. We have built up advantages in talent training and scientific research, with an integrated system of basic research, applied research, and industrial application. Currently SESE has five academic specialties leading in China: (1) Waste Water Treatment and Optimal Control Technologies; (2) Waste Treatment and Resource Utilization Technology; (3) Air Pollution Control Theories and Technologies; (4) Membrane Technologies and Drinking Water Security; (5) Environmental Biological and Ecological Remedy Technologies. SESE has trained a large number of inter-disciplinary talents for environmental protection. The faculty in SESE has a rational proportion of age, educational background and academic title. We have not only influential academician and famous professors, but also young talents subject leaders.

   Since its establishment, SESE has invested about 60 million RMB to build the Experiment Education Center of Environmental Science and Engineering with the total area of 5000 m2 and equipments valued about 10 million RMB. Under the Experiment Education Center there are Laboratory of Water Pollution Control Engineering, Laboratory of Air Pollution Control Engineering, Laboratory of Solid Wastes Disposal Engineering, Laboratory of Environmental Safety and Simulation, Laboratory of Resource Recycle and Utilization, Laboratory of Environmental Monitoring, Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry, Laboratory of Environmental Biological Technologies. The experimental condition of SESE The experimental condition of SESE can perfectly satisfy the needs of education and research. In 2010, the Experiment Education Center was granted “Qualified Educational Laboratory of Colleges in Zhejiang”, as well as “Demonstration Center of Experimental Education in Zhejiang (under construction)”. Although SESE is still located in Jiaogong Road Campus, a 10000 m2 new building for SESE will be ready in Xiasha Campus in September, 2012. The education and research condition of SESE has reached the top level in Zhejiang Province, having established the Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab for Solid Wastes Disposal & Reclamation, one Teaching Team of Universities in Zhejiang, one Scientific-Innovative Team of Universities in Zhejiang, the Zhejiang Research & Development Base of National Engineer Research Center of Urban Water Resources (North), and one “Industry-Teaching-Research” Base (Zhejiang Industrial Environmental Protection Design and Research Institute).
